The title Kaala, can be variously translated in English as “Dark-Skinned One” or “Lord of Death”. Kaala is about the life of Nellai/Tirunelveli based Tamilians who live in large number in Mumbai, and the film talks about the livelihood of a society, Dharavi in particular. The film is not inspired by any person’s life.
Rajinikath (affectionately called as “Thalaivar” by his fans) in his 164th film, plays the role of a man from Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu, who escapes to Mumbai as a child and goes on to become a powerful slumlord and later a gangster in the Dharavi slums.
